Also?

Dear Diary,

I would like some confirmation that in the Ethel Merman picture below, Edwin's hair looks red. The BHE insists that the boy will not be a ginger (because the BHE had such a hard time with being made fun of as a kid, which I am sure had more to do with him being a dork than with him being a ginger). But I just don't think there's any denying it.

Let's just hope the other kids don't start calling him ginger balls. (Flight of the Concords? Anyone? Anyone?)

Also, if anyone knows of a sort of dog whisperer for babies, let me know. This kid needs to learn to sleep in his crib like a big boy. I've tried offering dog treats to no avail. Were I to curl up in his crib with him, I'm sure he'd be golden. But that's just not practical. He is supposed to be napping in there right now, but is. not. napping.

Love,
Fluffy

Do you swaddle him? Ava only sleeps when swaddled. It makes napping hard since we have to anticipate the nap and get her swaddled. We haven't even tried the crib yet. She's still sleeping in her moses basket.

I'm sure you have the book "the Baby Whisperer" by now... before I actually had a kid it sounded like the most humane way to try to deal with it. Then once you have an actual screaming infant in your house it all goes out the window. But I think the overall premise is pretty sound (trying to keep them on a feeding schedule, putting them down while they are still a little awake).

Hey Fluffy, I haven't tried bringing Ava to bed for exactly that reason. I don't even sleep so well sometimes when she's in her basket in our room. I'm trying to get Ava to nap right now but the roof to our building is being replaced and it is LOUD. I may have a very cranky baby on my hands soon.

My daughter would have nothing to do with her crib but I kept trying from time to time (she slept in a co-sleeper attached to our bed). One day at about 3.5 months, she just went down for a nap in there like it was no biggie. We moved her in there permanently at 4 months and she has been fine with it ever since. Give it a little time, he's still so little.

Oh, and the book I used was Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child. It was very helpful!

Yep, we have that book! Everyone I know swears by it. Hopefully it will work for us. I'm so bad at this type of thing, so the term "sleep training" has me worried. You should see how our dogs behave.

Sorry...no kids yet, so I have no advice for you. I just wanted to tell you that I'm a fan of your blog and find you absolutely hilarious!

This worked well for us, I esp. liked the whole "4th trimester" stuff. My kids didn't like swaddling, but they love the shooshing and the womb sounds. I bought a womb track off iTunes and it was perfect (I think it was called "The Womb"). It takes consistency and a little time, but stick with it and eventually the baby will catch on. Good luck :)
